Research Farm Summer Student Employmment

Description:

The Plant Science & LA Research Farm is taking applications for a summer worker from May through August to assist the Farm Manager and staff with field research work. We are located one mile south of campus on Rt. 195.

Work hours: Monday through Friday, 8:00AM-3:30PM (7 hr/day, 35 hr/wk). $16.00 per hour.

We work on faculty and graduate student projects in turfgrass science, ornamental horticulture, veggies, field crops, orchards, soil science and more. We also have greenhouses to work in on those rainy days!

Duties may include, but are not limited to, mowing, watering, planting, weeding, and fertilizing. Candidate must be able to work outdoors and operate farm and power equipment including tractors, lawn mowers, line trimmers, etc.

Current, USA valid automobile driver’s license is required.

Experience is a plus, but we will train.

      Summer Seasonal Farm Crew

      Description:
      This position is perfect for those want to play a very integral role in a farm business. Cloverleigh Farm is a small-scale diversified farm that operates a Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) program in addition to sales to the local food co-op, area school districts and a few restaurants. Most of our members live in a 30 minute radius of the farm.

      The farm crew will be involved in: seeding, transplanting, weeding, harvesting, washing & packing. The work is very physical and is geared toward those to love to learn and work in an outdoor environment. Responsibilities include managing the same CSA pickup day each week all season. We have a planned series of public on-farm events to celebrate our 10 year anniversary, which staff can participate in as interested. We will be building out a new farm store this season and adding a high tunnel.

      This is seasonal summer work May-August according often to an academic calendar.

      The farm crew works Tues-Saturday averaging 40-45/wk. Work days begin at 7 am and end at 4 pm with a 30 minute unpaid break for lunch and short paid breaks mid morning and mid afternoon.

      Landscape Architecture Associate - Engineering & Architecture Associates Program

      Description:
      The Engineering & Architecture Associates Program is a two-year rotational program at The Port Authority of New York & New Jersey open to Engineering and Architecture students who are receiving a bachelor’s or master’s degree between September 2023 and May 2024. During their first year, Associates rotate through different Engineering/Architecture disciplines in both construction and design. Associates also rotate through different Port Authority facilities, like: George Washington Bridge; Holland Tunnel; JFK Airport; LaGuardia Airport; Lincoln Tunnel; Newark Airport; PATH; World Trade Center; and more. In their second year, Associates focus on the discipline they applied for. In addition to gaining hands-on experience and becoming part of the team in each rotation, the Engineering & Architecture Associates Program also provides mentorship, professional development, training, networking, and facility tours.

      Even though this is a rotational program, Associates are full-time, permanent employees with a yearly salary and benefits. After successful completion of the program, Associates are promoted to Associate Engineer/Architect. As of 2023, there are close to 200 program alumni still working at the agency. The majority of the property is wooded, with a stream on the east side of the home with a natural 12’ waterfall.       Objective(s)/Description of Job:

      • Increase privacy, currently at 0.
      • Maximize noise reduction from vehicle traffic (18-wheelers travel the road on an hourly basis).
      • Prevent salt damage to the landscape, there is major salt use on road.
      • Receive design options; Open to letting any students design as they please.
        • Prefers “lower” maintenance plantings with seasonal changes as plant types end and another begins.
        • Enjoy and appreciate various types of grass, fragrant flowering plants, etc.
      • Design suggestions for creating a small sitting area for 2-4 people that blends nature with home.
      • Design ideas for creating a space to enjoy the stream/waterfall area.
      • Ensure the stream receives the cleanest water from run-off, ensuring silt is reduced and the stream keeps its gravel look, etc. 
      • Ensuring retaining walls are properly designed to industry standards. Aka, proper drainage, compaction behind walls, etc. Similar idea when using clay pavers. We are not using concrete pavers.
